Crushing, grinding, and flotation are the three major steps in the process of nickel ore beneficiation. These steps are followed by a series of chemical and physical processes to separate the valuable minerals from the gangue material.
The first step in the process is crushing the nickel ore into smaller particles. This is usually done using a jaw crusher or gyratory crusher. The crushed ore is then ground in ball mills or rod mills to a size suitable for flotation. Grinding is an essential step as it helps to liberate the valuable minerals from the gangue material.

After grinding, the next step is flotation. Flotation is a process in which valuable minerals are separated from the gangue material based on their hydrophobicity. In the case of nickel ore, the valuable minerals such as pentlandite and pyrrhotite are hydrophobic, while the gangue minerals such as serpentine and talc are hydrophilic. The crushed and ground ore is mixed with water and chemicals called collectors, which selectively bind to the valuable minerals. Air bubbles are then introduced into the mixture, and the hydrophobic minerals attach to the air bubbles and rise to the surface as a froth. This froth is then skimmed off and dried to produce a concentrate of nickel minerals.
The concentrate is further processed through a series of chemical and physical processes to produce nickel metal or nickel-containing products. These processes may include smelting, roasting, leaching, and electrorefining, depending on the desired final product.
