Spodumene is a lithium mineral extracted from pegmatite. Spodumene is known for its high lithium content and is the most widely mined lithium mineral resource. Other pegmatite silicates containing lithium include lepidolite and dipolite feldspar.
Spodumene was once the main source of lithium production, but with operating costs significantly lower, the industry switched to extracting lithium from brine. As a result, producers have focused on developing brine deposits, while spodumene resources remain largely neglected. However, the explosion in demand for lithium is requiring more lithium-containing sources than ever before. This, combined with the high lithium content of spodumene, makes the exploration and development of spodumene deposits an attractive undertaking.
The process of extracting lithium from spodumene is almost always first concentrated by crushing, grinding and foam flotation, and then dried in a rotary dryer to produce a dry lithium concentrate.
Spodumene crusher
Mine running ore is usually bulky to avoid fine grain, and track grates are definitely required to limit the size of the coarse ore fed into the jaw crusher. Two section open circuit crushing is satisfactory in the production range of 200 tons per 8 hours.
A fixed screen, positioned at an opening approximately below the jaw crusher, removes underscreen material from the primary jaw crusher feed. The vibrating screen removes underscreen material from the feed of the two-stage cone crusher. The removal of undersieving material reduces the amount of fine powder produced and increases the capacity of the device.
Spodumene grinding
It turns out that vertical mills are well suited for grinding pegmatite minerals such as feldspar and spodumene. The grinding circuit shall have a controlled feed rate, which is achieved by an adjustable stroke or variable speed belt feed. There should be enough fine ore storage for at least one day, preferably with more storage space.
Flotation of spodumene
Pre-flotation treatment usually begins with the rod mill. A cleaner (e.g., sodium silafluoride, trisodium phosphate or sodium sulfide and sodium hydroxide) is added to the rod mill with fine crushed ore and the grinding is completed with a dilute slurry (25-35% solid). The screw screen at the outlet of the rod mill eliminates excessive impurities in the grinding circuit, which is closed by a vertical centrifugal sand pump and vibrating screen. Vibrating screen with stainless steel screen cloth, screening 20 ~ 30 mesh.
