Iron ore mining in Malaysia has been a contentious issue in recent years. Many protests and demonstrations have taken place in the last decade, demanding that the Malaysian government take action against mining companies operating in the country.
In 2021, the Malaysian government announced that it would revoke the mineral ore licenses of 15 mining companies in the state of Pahang, which is one of the main iron ore producing regions in the country. The move was taken after an audit revealed that the companies had not complied with environmental regulations and had caused significant damage to the environment.
The companies affected by the decision include those owned by prominent Malaysian businesspeople, as well as foreign-owned companies. The government has also announced that it will take legal action against the companies for violating environmental laws.
The decision to revoke the licenses has been welcomed by environmental groups, who have long called for stricter regulations on mining activities in the country. However, it has also been criticized by some business groups, who argue that the move will hurt the Malaysian economy and result in job losses.
The Malaysian government has stated that it remains committed to promoting sustainable mining practices in the country. It has also announced plans to introduce new regulations and guidelines to govern mining activities, with a focus on protecting the environment and ensuring that mining companies operate in a responsible manner.
Overall, the decision to revoke the licenses of 15 mining companies in Malaysia is a significant step towards promoting sustainable mining practices in the country. While it may result in some short-term economic challenges, the move will ultimately benefit both the environment and the Malaysian economy in the long run.
