Jaw crusher is a compression type crusher, comprised of a fixed jaw and moving jaw positioned in a (V). The movable jaw compresses material against the fixed jaw, crushing the material to the desired size. The material exits the jaw through a discharge opening, allowing it to be further processed or used for various purposes like construction materials, road building, and much more.
The working principle of a jaw crusher is straightforward. The crusher’s mechanical components (such as the eccentric shaft, toggle plates, and toggle seats) allow for the continuous crushing motion and force that is generated when the crusher’s two jaw plates are working in tandem. The fixed jaw plate is mounted on the front of the crusher, while the movable jaw plate is supported by a pitman arm, enabling it to move up and down using an eccentric shaft.

As the material enters the crusher, it is gripped by the two jaw plates and crushed between them. The compressive force exerted by the jaws breaks the material into smaller pieces, which then move down the crushing chamber and exit through the discharge opening at the bottom of the crusher.
The size of the crushed material is determined by the gap between the two jaw plates, known as the crusher’s setting. Adjusting the setting allows for the control of the size of the final product, with smaller settings producing finer crushed material and larger settings producing coarser material.
In addition to the primary crushing function, a jaw crusher can also be utilized in various secondary and tertiary crushing applications. This versatility is achieved by adjusting the eccentric shaft’s rotational speed, which changes the crusher’s throw, allowing for different crushing chamber configurations.
Overall, the principle of operation for a jaw crusher involves the compression of the material between two opposing surfaces to achieve the desired size reduction.
