The Greenbushes Lithium Mine in Western Australia has been running for more than 25 years. It is acknowledged to be the longest continuously operating lithium beneficiation plant in Western Australia. It is the world’s leading producer of lithium concentrate. Greenbushes is estimated to have more than 30 million tonnes of lithium ore reserves, including at least 7 million tonnes of 4.0% Li2O ore. Greenbushes Lithium Mine owns two beneficiation plants. One produces industrial grade lithium concentrate and the other produces chemical grade lithium concentrate. As shown in Figure 8, gravity separation, heavy medium separation, flotation and magnetic separation are adopted to obtain the above lithium concentrate products.

The mine spodumene ore adopts a two-stage jaw crushing and a three-stage cone crusher to break the ore to -16 mm, and then it is sent to the ball mill. The fraction of less than size (-250μm) discharged from the ball mill will be sent to the cyclone separator to remove the slime (-20μm) as the tailings after the ball grinding part (-250μm) into the cyclone, the excluded slime (-20μm) as the tailings, the cyclone bottom flow is sent to the flotation process. After ball milling, the upper part of the screen (+250 μm) is screened with 800 μm screen, and the material under the screen is magnetically separated, and the non-magnetic components are used to produce glass grade spodumene. The sifted material is returned to the ball mill. In the flotation process, fatty acid collector and sodium carbonate are used to float spodumene and tourmaline. Spodumene concentrate with Li2O grade of 7.2% and Fe2O3 content of 0.4% can be obtained by one stage roughing and two stages cleaning. The flotation concentrate uses gravity separation to recover cassiterite, tantalite and other heavy minerals, and then uses magnetic separation to remove tourmaline. Spodumene concentrate with Li2O grade of 7.5%-7.7% and Fe2O3 content of less than 0.1% was obtained.
