Jaw and cone crushers are two of the most common types of stone crushers used in the mining, quarrying, and construction industries. Both types of crushers use compressive force to break down large rocks into smaller pieces, but they do so in different ways.
Jaw Crushers
Jaw crusher are the simplest and most basic type of stone crusher. They consist of two jaws, one fixed and one movable, that come together to crush the material. The movable jaw is connected to a driveshaft that causes it to move up and down, while the fixed jaw remains stationary.

The jaw crusher works by forcing the material between the two jaws. As the movable jaw moves up, the material is compressed and crushed. As the movable jaw moves down, the material is further crushed and broken down.
Jaw crushers are typically used for coarse crushing, which is the first step in the crushing process. They can be used to crush a wide variety of materials, including rocks, ores, and concrete.
Cone Crushers
Cone crusher are more complex than jaw crushers, but they offer a number of advantages, including:
- Higher production rates
- Smaller particle size distribution
- Better product quality
Cone crushers work by using a rotating cone to crush the material. The cone is mounted on a horizontal shaft and is driven by a motor. As the cone rotates, it moves up and down inside a crushing chamber.

The material is fed into the crushing chamber through an opening at the top. As the cone moves up, the material is crushed between the cone and the chamber walls. As the cone moves down, the material is further crushed and broken down.
Cone crushers are typically used for fine crushing, which is the final step in the crushing process. They are well-suited for crushing hard and abrasive materials, such as ores and concrete.
Comparison of Jaw and Cone Crushers
Jaw and cone crushers have both advantages and disadvantages. Jaw crushers are simpler and less expensive than cone crushers, but they have lower production rates and produce a wider particle size distribution. Cone crushers have higher production rates and produce a narrower particle size distribution, but they are more complex and expensive.
The best type of crusher for a particular application will depend on the specific requirements of that application.
